Focusing
An introduction to embodied process and change
There is a kind of knowing that comes before words.
A sense that something in you is there, but not yet clear. A bodily feel for a situation that is more than you can think through from the outside. Most people recognise this experience. Few know how to work with it.
Focusing is the practice built around that capacity.
Developed by Eugene Gendlin through research into what actually made therapy effective, Focusing grew out of a simple but important observation: people who changed were often able to pause, attend to their own felt experience, and stay with something there before it was fully formed in words.
This 10-week online training teaches that capacity directly. It is open to individuals and practitioners across the UK, Australia, and Europe.
It is a structured, body-based way of learning how to make contact with your felt sense, stay with what is not yet clear, and allow new movement to come from within rather than from force, analysis, or self-improvement pressure.
FAQs
What you'll learnOver ten weeks, you will learn how to:
• Recognise and make contact with the felt sense
• Stay with something unclear without rushing to explain or fix it
• Sense when a genuine shift is beginning
• Let language come from felt experience rather than imposing it from outside
• Use Focusing for your own inner work
• Companion another person through the Focusing process with skill and care
By the end of the training, you will have a reliable, embodied practice you can use on your own and, where relevant, in your work with others.
Why this mattersMany people can reflect insightfully on their lives.
They understand the pattern. They know the history. They may even know exactly why something is the way it is. But when it comes to change, something remains stuck.
Focusing develops the capacity that often makes the difference. It helps you work with the place where experience is still forming, where something is felt but not yet fully known, and where a real shift can begin.
This is one of the reasons Gendlin’s work remains so important. It does not simply offer another technique. It teaches a way of relating to experience that supports genuine change. More about how I think about change.
Who this is forAnyone drawn to serious inner work who wants something more precise than mindfulness and more embodied than talk.
People in helping, teaching, or leadership roles who want a more grounded way of listening, both to others and to themselves.
Practitioners who want to add a body-based, process-oriented skill to their clinical work. See my full training and mentoring offer.
You do not need prior experience with Focusing. You need a willingness to slow down, pay attention to what your body already knows, and stay with what you find there.
“What is split off, not felt, remains the same. When it is felt, it changes."
Eugene Gendlin
How it works
• 10 weekly online sessions
• 1:1 with Mitch
• Small group format
• Teaching, demonstration, and guided practice each week
• Paired Focusing exchanges so you learn by doing

This is practical training. You will not only hear about Focusing. You will learn it from the inside.
This training sits within the tradition of Inner Relationship Focusing and draws on the work of Gendlin, Ann Weiser Cornell, Jo Kennedy, and my own practice as an accredited Focusing teacher.
For PractitionersOver time, Focusing tends to change how you listen, what you notice, and how you recognise where real process is happening inside yourself and in a client. It is not a replacement for your existing modality. It is a way of being with another person’s experience that makes everything else you do more precise.
OVERVIEWFocusing is not about becoming better at analysing yourself.
It is about learning how to come into contact with what your experience already knows, but has not yet been able to say clearly.
That is the capacity this training develops.
